With UNEP support, countries integrate environmental sustainability into development and investment planning, while governments turn to UNEP for guidance, solutions, and support in building their environmental capacity. Thanks to UNEP support, many countries have built stronger environmental institutions, introduced sound legislation, enhanced technical capacity, gained greater knowledge, made greener investments and improved cross-border collaboration.
As a key partner of major environmental funds such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Adaptation Fund, and the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol, UNEP enables countries to access financing and programming, as well as through other bilateral or multilateral public sources.
One of UNEP's major achievements has been the initiation, negotiation and implementation of numerous multilateral environmental agreements, bringing the world together to tackle major environmental challenges and enabling countries to put in place sound and effective environmental policies and legislation. UNEP now provides the secretariat for 15 multilateral environmental agreements and offers programmatic support to others. Together, they address a wide range of environmental issues such as emissions, hazards of chemicals, conservation of biodiversity, endangered and migratory species, protection of oceans, restoration of the ozone layer, and more. UNEP is also appreciated for free access to environmental information, for providing tools such as integrated environmental assessments, for enabling South-South and triangular cooperation, and for education and awareness-raising campaigns.
